How off-season durian works, and why June is still a gap
Any supplier can tell you they have durian year-round. Ask them which months come from which region, and the conversation gets shorter.
Three seasons, not one
Vietnamese durian does not come from a single harvest. It comes from at least three, and they sit in different parts of the calendar:
- Mekong Delta, main crop — roughly March to May. The traditional season in Bến Tre, Tiền Giang and Vĩnh Long.
- Mekong Delta, off-season crop — roughly November to March. Induced, not natural. More on this below.
- Central Highlands — roughly August to October. The Đắk Lắk harvest, which has become the largest single volume in the country.
Put end to end, that covers about ten months. It does not cover twelve.
What "off-season" actually means
Delta growers induce flowering outside the natural window using controlled water stress — withholding irrigation and covering the root zone to hold the soil dry, then releasing water to trigger flowering on a chosen date. It is a technique this region has practised for decades, and it is the reason Vietnamese durian reaches export markets in months when the rest of Southeast Asia has none.
It is also demanding. Push a tree too hard and you lose the following season. A grower who does this well is making a two-year decision, not a two-month one — which is precisely why the relationship between an exporter and a grower matters more here than a price.
June and July
Between the end of the delta main crop and the start of the highland harvest there is a real gap. It is short, it is predictable, and no amount of technique closes it entirely.
What closes it is frozen stock. Frozen whole durian and frozen pulp, produced during peak season and held at −18 °C, ship year-round with a twenty-four-month shelf life. If your channel can take frozen, your supply is genuinely continuous. If it cannot, you should plan around June and July rather than be surprised by them.
What to ask a supplier
- Which months come from which region?
- Do you have your own plant in the highlands, or do you buy that season in?
- What do you ship in June?
The last question is the useful one. A supplier who answers "the same as every other month" is either buying from someone else or has not thought about it.
