A district that makes trees, not just fruit
Chợ Lách sits in Bến Tre province, on the alluvial ground between two branches of the Mekong. For well over a century it has been the place the delta comes to for grafted seedlings — durian, pomelo, longan, rambutan. Growers across southern Vietnam plant trees that started in a Chợ Lách nursery.
That produces a specific kind of local knowledge. In a district that propagates varieties, people talk about rootstock and grafting dates the way other places talk about weather. The question is never simply "is the fruit good" but "which variety, on what rootstock, planted when, and how has it behaved for the last three seasons."
